BALI BUKIT WOMEN'S INITIATIVE |
||
|
The landscape of the South Bali 'Bukit' ("Hill") is very different to the verdant green in the postcards of Bali. Whilst this area is very popular with surfers, The Bukit is barren and arid, providing little opportunity for horticulture and resulting a lower standard of living than the rest of Bali. The Friends of Idlewild are funding an initiative to develop the traditional handicrafts of the area and bring them to market. Here, initiative leader Indra Schwabe prepares the paperwork for an early order of the womens unique handicraft products. These photos show a traditional double layer betel-nut basket, woven in Timor and hand embellished with colourful beads by the ladies of the Bali Bukit Initiative. |
